Public Benefit

Uplifters was created to rebuild homes, reduce displacement, and lessen the burden on government after the January 2025 wildfire.

Rebuilding Housing Stock

The program directly replaces homes lost in the wildfire with new, resilient single-family homes. Each home is built to current California wildfire standards and designed to be insurable, addressing one of the primary barriers preventing individual homeowners from rebuilding.

Reducing Government Burden

By executing a coordinated rebuilding program, Uplifters performs activities that would otherwise fall to public agencies or remain unaddressed. The Foundation manages land acquisition, construction, and disposition — functions that require institutional capacity beyond what individual homeowners or government offices can efficiently provide at this scale.

Restoring Community Stability

Displacement erodes communities. When residents cannot return, schools lose enrollment, local businesses lose customers, and neighborhood networks dissolve. By accelerating the return of families, the program creates visible rebuilding momentum that supports broader community recovery.

Reinvesting Residual Proceeds

After repayment of all bond obligations, remaining program proceeds are allocated to:

  • Community infrastructure
  • Public facilities
  • Neighborhood reinvestment

Charitable Purpose

The Foundation operates as a California nonprofit public benefit corporation and 501(c)(3) organization.

Its charitable purposes include:

  • Relieving the poor, distressed, and underprivileged
  • Lessening the burdens of government
  • Combating community deterioration
  • Providing housing to individuals of low and moderate income displaced by natural disaster

The City of Los Angeles has formally recognized that this program contributes to its recovery objectives by rebuilding housing and supporting repopulation.
